Optomap imaging has revolutionised our retinal examinations since 2006 and we now offer a range of OCT scans including a premium glaucoma module for early detection of optic nerve changes and both full colour and infrared scanning for our diabetic and ARMD patients. Optomap Retinal Imaging
In 2006 we introduced the Optomap retinal imaging system with ultra-widefield scanning laser technology to support or optometrists in detecting, analysing and monitoring ocular disease that may present in the retinal periphery and otherwise go undetected using traditional techniques and equipment. The current Daytona model allows views of more than 80% or 200 degrees of the retina in a single capture without the need for dilating eyedrops.
Your retinal images are stored securely allowing direct comparison at subsequent examinations and the earliest detection of changes that may indicate ocular disease or general health issues such as diabetes and hypertension.

Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Christopher Nixon Optometrists were early adopters of OCT technology using Zeiss Cirrus intruments since 2010. This non-invasive technique creates cross sectional images through ocular tissues allowing us to create 3D images of structures within the eye.
We have recently invested in the Heidelberg Engineering Spectralis OCT which provides even higher resolution of optical structures.
Spectralis uses a unique eye tracking system that detects specific points on the retina and ensures that subsequent scans are made within 2 microns (that's 2/1000mm) of the original scan. This precise measuring system allows us to monitor changes over time better than ever before.
We have invested in the Premium Glaucoma Module - software that enables us to accurately measure changes within the optic nerve and in the retinal nerve fibre and ganglion cell layers - structural changes that occur in glaucoma well before any functional vision loss can be detected.
The high resolution cross sectional images provide detailed analysis in macular degeneration and other dseases of the retina such as central serous retinopathy and cystoid macular oedema.
The extent and effect of vitreoretinal traction, epiretinal membrane formation and macular holes are clearly evident with Spectralis OCT and the multicolour mode highlights deep retinal changes in diabetes in much more detail than with conventional photography.
Using infrared light the scattering effects of cataract are negated providing a much better view of the retina than with conventional techniques in these patients.
Nerve Fibre Analysis with the OCT
Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy affecting the optic nerve rim and the temporal retinal nerve fibres resulting in loss of peripheral and mid-peripheral vision. It is usually asymmetrical between the two eyes. Whilst conventional examination of the optic nerve, visual field testing and measurement of intraocular pressure are all important, a thorough assessment of the retinal nerve fibre layer and the optic nerve provides the earliest possible detection of the changes that lead to glaucoma.
The Spectralis OCT takes a series of radial scans through the optic nerve. These allow us to detect precisely the size and shape of the optic nerve. This ensures accurate measurement of the minimum thickness of neural tissue at the optic nerve head. Further circular scans and detection of the fovea in the centre of the retina provide images that can be assessed for loss of nerve fibres and asymmetry between the upper and lower retina - another characteristic of glaucoma. These measurements can be compared to a gene matched database providing evidence of deviation from expected norms and of course with previous scans to show signs of progressive deterioration.
i.profiler Wavefront Aberrometry
The human eye, just like any optical system, is far from perfect. Refractive errors such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism are known as low order aberrations and have significant impact on your vision. These errors are easy to detect and correct. Your eyes may also have a number of more complex or higher order aberrations that reduce the quality your vision especially in low lighting and when driving at night.
The Zeiss i.Profiler is able to measure these more complex aberrations and calculate your unique i.Scription reading. This enables us to fine tune your spectacle lenses, correct these complex abberations and provide you with sharper vision than could be achieved with conventional spectacle lenses.
Visual Field Testing
Visual field testing examines the health of the nerve pathways connecting the eyes with the visual centres in the brain. We routinely use visual field testing when screening for and monitoring glaucoma but this type of assessment is also useful for detecting loss of vision caused by stroke and other, less common conditions.
At Christopher Nixon Optometrists we use a Humphrey Matrix FDT visual field analyser. Many studies show this method of screening can reveal glaucoma defects earlier than other methods of measuring visual fields. This is because the FDT is testing the magnocellular ganglion cell pathway and in particular, a subgroup of M cells that are thought to be damaged in early glaucoma.
Corneal topography involves mapping cornea a little like Odnance Survey map land contours. It generates a detailed visual description of corneal curvature and detects subtle variations in shape and power.
Corneal topography is extremely useful in fitting RGP and OrthoK contact lenses as it allows us to tailor-make the lenses to the exact specification of your eye. It is also an invaluable method of monitoring changes that occur in ocular conditions such as keratoconus and also in unstable corneas following refractive surgery.
